Montgomery Ward, founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in 1872, was one of the pioneers of the mail-order business. The first Montgomery Ward catalog was a single sheet of paper featuring 163 items for sale, and it grew into one of the most successful mail-order businesses in the world.

Hammacher Schlemmer, founded in 1848, took a different approach by focusing on offering a variety of products, including innovative items like the pop-up toaster, portable radio, electric toothbrush, and telephone answering machine. The company's first catalog was released in 1881, after Albert Hammacher took over from founder Charles Tollner.
